EAJ Launches Lower Shabelle Community Engagement Interventions with Message of Support from Southwest State Minister of Justice and Lower Shabelle Governor

At a ceremony convened in Baidoa on October 5 to mark the launch of EAJ’s early recovery justice work with its local implementing partners Bay Women and Lifeline Somalia, Minister of Justice, Hon. Mohamed Hussein, pledged his support for EAJ’s efforts to work with communities to begin reintroducing justice services. The Minster of the Interior of Southwest State, Hon. Mohamed Abukar, also attended to show his support.

An expression of support was also communicated by Lower Shabelle’s governor, Hon. Ibrahim Najah, who stated: “The EAJ Program interventions comes at the right time when there is a huge gap in justice services. Working with communities can be a great approach to deliver justice assistance to the local population in Lower Shabelle.”

The launch follows initial community consultations conducted by EAJ’s partners in the implementation areas of Afgooye, Merka, Janaale, Sabiid, Anole and Awdhegle. With technical and funding support from EAJ, both partners will work with local communities and administrations to establish justice committees through which communities and government will endeavor to co-create justice services reflecting community needs, with EAJ’s Justice Assistance Unit working with the committee to assist community members with justice grievances.
